Mitsubishi Lancer GTS Performance

The front-wheel-drive 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS is propelled by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Our test car was equipped with the standard five-speed manual transmission.

Pontiac G8 V6 Design/Fit and Finish

The 2008 Pontiac G8's interior won't win any design awards, but there's simplicity and restraint here that's been missing in recent Pontiacs. Most surfaces are flat black with varying textures. Doesn't sound too sexy, right? Luckily, in practice, the dash and major controls have an intentionally straightforward look that never veers into stark or cheap.

BMW 550i
Function

Like all 5 Series cars, the 2008 BMW 550i comes with the iDrive electronics interface system that controls myriad vehicle functions, from simple radio presets to the navigation system and in-depth climate settings. BMW has streamlined this design since its introduction several years ago and added six dash-mounted preset buttons; however, iDrive is still needlessly complicated. For instance, going from a satellite radio preset to an FM preset takes two upward mouse pushes, two mouse turns, two downward mouse pulls and then a few additional turns. You get used to it, but people get used to cleaning bathrooms, too. If the 550 has an Achilles' heel, iDrive is most definitely it.

The Ideal Truck To Help Grandma Move?

Vehicle Tested: 2008 Dodge Dakota Laramie 4dr Extended Cab 4WD SB (4.7L 8cyl 5A)
Pros: Abundant and innovative interior storage, only V8 power in its class, best-in-class towing capacity, good braking performance, comfy seats.
Cons: Frightfully expensive, industrial interior, punishing highway ride, fussy navigation controls.

There are certain things you own that you just shouldn't tell people about, and the 2008 Dodge Dakota is one of them. No, that's not a cheap shot at Dodge's midsize truck. Rather, it's like a beach house or a big-screen TV. If you have one, you will suddenly have friends calling on you for favors every weekend.

Once word is out that you have a pickup truck, friends, family and casual acquaintances will immediately start turning to you for their moving, hauling and towing needs. Sure enough, when news of our time with the 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab Laramie spread, one of our editors was roped into helping his grandmother move. So the Dakota was filled up with 40 years' worth of Grandma's stuff, including a pair of shelving units, a chandelier, 18 plants and a Bang & Olufsen record player.
